Memorial Day Weekend is almost here – and here at Casey's everyone is really looking forward to it. Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer and, like most of you, we're so ready to welcome the warmer weather!

Our hope for you is that you enjoy the long weekend with loved ones in a super fun and meaningful way, so we're sharing some of our favorite ways to make the holiday weekend extra special.

A Picnic to Pay Respects

Obviously, we all love Memorial Day because some of us get a Monday off work… but it's also important to remember the true reason behind the holiday – to honor military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Over the long weekend, get the family together to visit a nearby cemetery to leave flags and flowers on the gravesides of those who have lost their lives while serving.

You can even make a day of it and stop at your local Casey's to grab some on-the-go snacks to keep you fueled for the whole day. Then you and your family can enjoy a little picnic while discussing the importance of the holiday and sharing any stories of any service members you knew personally.

An Easy Backyard Gathering

One of the most popular ways to celebrate Memorial Day is by getting together with loved ones to enjoy the nice weather outdoors.

Make your gathering casual and carefree by setting up little games and activities that let entertaining be low-key for everyone (even the host) - we suggest a few yard games like croquet, badminton, volleyball, or bocce ball. For the kids, set out hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, or water balloons. It doesn't take much for them to have fun!

Grill outs are a perfect way to celebrate the holiday weekend, but if grilling isn’t your thing, pick up a fan-fave BBQ Brisket Pizza to partake in the outdoor festivities without any of the hard work!

You can also grab everyone’s favorite beverages at Casey's and then fill up a kiddie pool or have a sprinkler running so that you can beat the heat.

Add in some tunes to keep the party lively (we suggest these summer playlists for some upbeat bops!).

A Tasty Fun Dessert

While we know that pizza is the most delicious, crowd-pleasing meal for Memorial Day guests, we also know you can't forget about dessert too. One of our favorite summertime recipes is dessert "pizza" – and this one is perfect for a Memorial Day get-together.

Watermelon "pizza" with fruit and whipped topping

Follow our easy directions below for an incredible sweet treat to pair with your favorite Casey's pizza.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe watermelon
  • 1 quart blueberries
  • 1 quart raspberries or strawberries
  • 16 ounces whipped topping

Instructions

  1. Wash watermelon before slicing and cut into 1" thick rounds. Set rounds aside in a single layer on parchment or wax paper lined baking sheets.
  2. Wash and dry berries. If using strawberries, thinly slice.
  3. Spread 2 T of whipped topping on each round of watermelon.
  4. Scatter berries over your watermelon slices.
  5. Repeat until all rounds are covered.
  6. Refrigerate for 15 to 30 minutes or until topping is set. Remove, slice each round into 6 "pizza slices" and serve immediately. Enjoy!
